Looting Reported in North Wichita Overnight

KAKE NEWS Wichita -

Unrest in Wichita overnight included reports of looting in North Wichita.

Police were called around 11 p.m. Tuesday night to 21st and Arkansas after groups were caught looting a Quik Trip at the intersection. People were seen running out of the store, and one person threw a rock into the window as police put on riot gear.

Just after 11:45 p.m., Wichita Police SWAT warned people gathered to leave the area. They called the gathering "an unlawful assembly."

When people refused to leave, standing on the northwest corner of the intersection, police moved in, firing less-lethal rounds and tear gas into demonstrators. At least one person threw a tear gas canister back at officers; others threw fireworks at officers, including artillery shells and bottle rockets.

Around 12:30 a.m., police were able to clear the area of demonstrators but stayed in the area for several hours.

No word of any arrests or injuries.

This is the same area where demonstrations have taken place since the weekend, and turned violent early Tuesday morning, with police taking gunfire and being hit by bottles and rocks. Three police officers were injured in that incident.

Police also responded to several calls of vandalism overnight.

An earlier protest Tuesday at 21st and Maize -- over in New Market Square -- was mostly peaceful. At least 100 people participated in the event. Area businesses shut down early due to concerns of potential violence.
